As Looking Back told in March, 100 years ago Holy Trinity Church tower was in danger of collapsing because a huddle of ugly old buildings that had grown up around it had been removed. The mayor used the D&S Times to launch an appeal to save the church, which was propped up by stout pieces of wood 100 years ago.
