Newport Bridge, mid-1960sONCE the heaviest vertical lift bridge in the world, the Newport Bridge catches the eye. It was a mechanical miracle: its two electric motors could lift its 2,700 tonne deck up 37 metres (269ft) in just 90 seconds to allow shipping to pass beneath.It was designed by Mott, Hay & Anderson (whom we shall meet in a minute in Newcastle), and built by Dorman Long, of Middlesbro
