ON THIS DAY 60 YEARS AGOWE choose this page from the Echo archives at random, and so it feels very odd to draw attention to the news, on July 13, 1964, of the death of the deputy curator of Bowes Museum, Tony Ellis, in a car accident. He had been the keeper of Salford Art Gallery where he had befriended artist LS Lowry. Lowry stayed with him, and his wife, Joan, in Barnard Castle on many occasion
